Justin Beck on Podcasting

 <itunes:author>Steve Sloan</itunes:author>

On December 4, 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Podcaster and Media Producer Justin Beck spoke to San Jose State University journalism students about podcasting and new media. As SJSU School of Journalism and Mass Communications professor Cynthia McCune reported in the JMC Journal Blog, "Beck talked with students about the process of developing and producing a podcast. He said one of the most important steps of the process is creating a tape log -- a rough or complete transcript of each interview -- with time codes noted so you'll be able to go back and find the clips you want to use."

Who needs ink?

 <itunes:author>Steve Sloan</itunes:author>

On March 30th 2006 the Commonwealth Club in San Jose put on a forum entitled Who Needs Ink? The Future of Newspapers. This was a timely forum given the recent sale of the Knight Ridder newspaper chain, which includes the Mercury News to McClatchy. Many employees of the Mercury News were in the audience. Students were admitted free. Jim Bettinger, Director of the Knight Fellowships Program, was the moderator. Speakers at the forum were Peter P. Appert, Publishing/Information Services Analyst, Goldman, Sachs; Jerry Ceppos, Former Vice President, Knight Ridder; Dan Gillmor, Director, Center For Citizen Media; Joan Walsh, Editor-In-Chief of Salon, After the forum I asked them some questions directed at journalism education. Finally Zach Davis, an eighteen year old high school journalism student, offered his perspective. 13.2 min, 3MB.

At this meeting we produced a podcast, which was presented here in the Edupodder Podcast as the previous show. This included recording, mixing, down sizing and FTP posting the file to the server. Finally we updated the RSS file that is the podcast. The whole time we recorded the session. There is plenty of conversation about that whole process here.
